We took a taxi to our hotel from the airport, so we didn't get to see much of picturesque Florence until we walked to meet a colleague at San Lorenzo Basilica. Along the way, on my first day in Florence I snapped this photo:
As you walk through Florence, you'll occasionally see signs high on walls marking how high the water rose in 1966. Many works of art were damaged during the flood and as a result new techniques in restoration were invented to care for the painting and statues damaged, although many are still awaiting repair.
